A laptop serial number has importance, its proof of ownership and can help identity you as the owner if it’s ever misplaced or stolen. If you are in ownership of a wonderful new laptop after the Christmas period then the first thing you should do is record the serial number.
Serial numbers on a laptop are usually on the base, within a white sticker. You may also find on that sticker a barcode and the model number of the laptop. Write everything down and file it away safely.
If you need to record the serial number but the sticker has been removed, either by you or a previous owner there are tools available to track what the serial number is. A free non-commercial use tool such as Belarc can help display the machine serial number but is most likely limited depending on the make & model of the laptop.
As always if you are in doubt about how to find your laptop serial number don’t hesitate to contact the manufacture support line.

I identified an old laptop serial and model number as follows;
remove the hard drive and the factory bios should show onscreen, the laptop serial number is shown in the advanced settings on the bios.
I have tried this approach on two different laptops with success and managed to locate the drivers, “Belarc advisor and sisoft sandra are other options but not always corect.
Micth you are right. Most BIOS settings will display the serial number or asset tag of the laptop.
