Slow Speeds On Virgin Media National Broadband Service


Are you a customer with Virgin Media and on their National Broadband service? If so you have probably experienced very slow speeds, usually after 4pm, then you are not alone.

A lot of my clients use Virgin Media’s Broadband service and without surprise they all experience the same problem, very slow speeds on their network. What’s interesting, according to some customers,  is that you could almost set your watch by Virgin Boradband as it grinds to crawl at 4pm each and every day (peak times).

Many people have expressed their concern about the slow speeds on Virgin Media’s Help forums but as Virgin Media’s reputation management skills are lacking to point of being non-existent customers are not getting the answers they deserve.   However, to quote Virgin Media on the reasons for slow speeds:

During 2009 the Virgin Media network was not able to support enough customers streaming video content such as iPlayer and YouTube.  To address this we have re-engineered the network to support a much greater volume of customers using video streaming.

Virgin Media is one of the largest ISP’s in the UK and for their network infrastructure unable to support customers who use BBC iPlayer and YouTube is not really acceptable as an Internet Service Provider who claim to be the UK’s fastest broadband provider.

How to fix slow speeds with Virgin Media National Broadband

If you are here to find out how to fix your slow speeds then you will not like my answer, I wouldn’t waste time even trying. Even though I posted earlier about how to speed up your home broadband connection the problem you are likely experiencing is down to Virgin Media’s infrastructure which they have openly admitted. However, Virgin Media have released an update about the issue and what they have done:

We started to release additional capacity into the National network to address the slow speed issues for the remaining customers. We’re pleased to confirm that this has helped significantly, with the vast majority of customers now reporting improved speeds and the ability to stream video.
