Unfortunately Christus Health Care in Huston has been thrown into the negative news spotlight after having their backup tapes stolen.
Posted in the Data Loss DB the stolen backup tapes contained personal records of hundreds, possibly thousands of patients for Christus Health Care. The tapes had been stolen from a car in a parking lot and Christus Health Care believes the theft was random and not targeted.

Common sense tells us never to leave valuables insight for an opportunist to take and laptops are no different. Even though we are comfortable in a place of business it really doesn’t mean we are safe from thieves.

Backup tapes are far from being a secure backup solution as Pharmaceutical firm Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) has learned recently. Yes there are a few precautions companies can take if they decide to use tapes as part of their backup solution but even BMS has failed performing the most important and basic thing, data encryption.
