When I ordered this product, I couldn’t find out much about it and hopes that it would fit our computer, an older Dell model. Technically, our computer’s a little too slow to fit Trend, but it works quite well.
It’s customizable, nice to look at and does 90% of its work in the background. My only major quibble would be that it seems to need to download something every day, and doesn’t do a good job of letting me know what it’s downloading or why. The size of the program doesn’t seem to be bloating, and I’ve noticed an increase in speed, not a decrease, since picking it up.
I’m very computer literate and never pay for this sort of security tool because there generally are good competitors that are free and a good browsing habit (ad blocking, noscript, deleting spam emails instead of opening them, etc) keeps me from having problems.
But I installed this on my laptop and found it worked well. I even went so far as to install a spyware on my computer, and the security sweet took care of it quickly. The interface is uniform, and I found the firewall very easy to work with, add rules, quickly turn on or modify.
I LOVE the package being a USB stick. This makes life easy when I’m on the go. It seems like a gimmick, but I like this gimmick.
In short, you will have a pretty secure computer if you use this product. It’s not that expensive for what you get if you don’t really have a great grasp on every aspect of computer security. I think it’s more for novices or enterprise style customers than people like me, but I like this product anyway. It did scan faster than Avast or basically any other product I found. Not a huge issue, but nice. It also surprised the heck out of me by blocking emails I would have known to delete but may have fooled some folks.
I recommend it. Especially for people who are new to computers or uncomfortable. It’s a nice security blanket that does offer legitimate protection.
The Internet Security package is not just an anti-virus (AV) product, it also includes a personal firewall and anti-spyware protection, but to me AV is the most important reason for buying this type of product. The point of an AV product is both very specific and very technical. Sure, the interface and ability to customize all of the products is important but what is most important is how well does the AV product protect your computer. According to my research, Trend-Micro is not at the top of the list in this area and therefore I can’t truly recommend them over other AV products. On the good side, however, Internet Security from Trend Micro is nowhere near the resource hog that McAfee is, it is relatively cheap to purchase, they allow you to install the software on up to three computers on a single purchase, and they provide free upgrades to their newest version.
The USB installation option is also unique and important if you do not have a CD/DVD drive, however it is not the only way to get the software onto your computer. Trend Micro (like most vendors in this space) offer a 30 day free trial version as a download and the activation/purchase price from the manufacturer is only about $6 more than at Amazon (shipping not included). Therefore, if you still want to try this product then I would go download and install it for free to see how you like it. If you like it, then just activate it. If you want a physical copy of the software then just give it two weeks and then order this version (unless you find an older version that can use the free upgrade on clearance somewhere). However, reading reviews is never as good as trying it out yourself.
This product is pretty innovative as it is installed via USB and not cd rom. Keep in mind, to try this product, you must uninstall all other security software. I tried it on a separate laptop in case I wasn’t happy with it. The one major thing I liked was that when it was scanning, it didn’t affect the other processes in the same way that macafee causes a slow down or momentary freezing of what you’re working on otherwise. I think it will be a matter of living with this software for a while before making a final decision on its overall effectiveness and how the renewal process works. In researching, I’ve noticed that there have been complaints about the product not functioning if it isn’t renewed at exactly the due date. I don’t know if this is true but it’s worth mentioning. I have it marked on my calendar to see when the year is up. Otherwise, it seems to be a good, innovative product with possibilities. As with anything new on the market, time does have a way of showing the glitches and hopefully, the creators will be constantly upgrading the software to move ahead with the times.
I will try to edit my review over time with updates or oddities with the product until the renewal date when I will make a decision whether or not to renew.
We have the program on two computers. Our third computer has Linux Ubuntu Distro and it’s my favorite. On the two Widows 7 computers the TM Security program is functioning well. Have had it installed just over a month now and all scans seem to be doing their job. On this program as well as my former program, both seemed to to be both protecting against all the bad stuff and Trend Micro seems be take up very little of the Operating System.
I had used Trend Micro, or PCcillian several years ago and have always been pleased with its doing the job. On new laptop, it came with McAfee. One feature of McAfee that I liked was the warning that you got when you went to a “suspected” web page. This caused me to back off quickly.
The best feature about Trend Micro is that your computer runs normally and it does not–as an Anti Virus program tend to hog your system. We also like the way the program automatically updates itself.
